Beach Olympics

In this exciting year that we are hosting the Olympic Games, Gloucestershire Lifesavers Youth Committee have organised a fun outing to Barry Island to hold our own Olympic Games at the beach.

It will be held on Sunday the 15th of July, keeping our fingers crossed for sunshine. We will be meeting at Cheltenham College Swimming Pool at 6.45 am ready for the coach to leave at 7.00 am. We will then be making a short stop at Dursley to pick some members up from there (time to be arranged).
The coach will then bring everyone back at 5pm arriving at Cheltenham College for 8pm.

The cost of the day will be £15 per person, which will include a fish and chip lunch, a t-shirt and transfers to and from Barry Island.

This event will be open to all members from clubs around the Gloucestershire Branch and we also may be meeting some of the members from the club at Barry Island. It will be a good chance to meet new and exciting people.

The age range for this event will be 12 and over, to allow the more experienced Rookie lifesavers to attend. Please could you return the permission slip along with a medical form – click here to download – and payment by the 29th of April 2012. Also, if you haven’t filled out a photographic consent form could you hand this in as well.

We are looking forward to this event and are building up many fun and exciting things for you to get involved with! We are organising this event so you can have some fun and visit the beach, with a bit of lifesaving thrown in.

Hope you can make it!!

International Youth Lifesaving Exchange 2012

Following the success of last year’s international youth exchange to Germany; I am pleased to report that we’ll be welcoming lifesavers from Kaufbeuren to the UK in August 2012. Sixteen youth members of the RLSS West Region will join sixteen young people from the DLRG (the German Lifesaving Association) for a week long programme of activities from 15-22 Aug 2012 inclusive.

The exchange will start in Bournemouth where we plan to spend a few days playing team-building games, learning beach lifeguard skills (including open-water swimming, beach sprints, lifeguard patrol skills and how to use specialised rescue equipment) and taking a tour of the RNLI’s training facility in Poole. We’ll then travel to Bristol, which will be our base for the second half of the week. We’ll spend time with each of the three branches that make up the RLSS West Region: sightseeing, getting to know each other, and taking part in lifesaving and cultural activities together.

National Lifesaving Championships 2012

Slightly later than normal, due to the Olympics and Paralympics, the National Lifesaving Championships final will take place at its regular venue – Ponds Forge, Sheffield – on Saturday 15th December!

The event sees competitors, officials and spectators travelling from all around the UK and Ireland, including those from the West Region, to compete in the final event – who will be awarded the Gold medals??

Competitors take part in four events: the Dry and Wet Simulated Emergency Response Competitions (SERCs), a line throw race and a swim and tow race. This tests their lifesaving skills and stamina.

To reach the final competitors will have competed in a Branch and Regional heat to gain their place in the final. Normally only the top competitor in each category at the Regional heat will progress to the final. However, due to the success of the West Region team in the 2011 final, the West Region has 3 extra places in the Female Masters 30-39, Female Masters 50-59 and Male Masters 60+ categories.

For more information on the rules, Branch and Regional Heats, as well as past results, check out the Sport section of the West Region website using the menu bar above.
