The RLSS UK are running Regional Training and Networking Events across the UK instead of running a National Conference this year.
The first event was run in Warwick on the 28th and 29th April – have a look at the write up of this event including the launch of the Top Trunks campaign – there are some interesting pictures!!

The Gloucestershire Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Sunday 27th May between 12noon and 4pm at The Strand in Cheltenham.
Lunch will be provided, along with a talk on the RLSS UK West Region German Exchange and Defibrillator Training. As well as the AGM and election of Officers.

For the second year, the RLSS will be running its National Water Safety Awareness Week in June 2012. One of the aims of the National Water Safety Awareness Week is to promote having fun and being safe in, on and near water.
There will be a number of events running in the West Region which will let you know about as the events are finalised. So check back for more information.
As part of the RLSS National Water Safety Awareness Week, the Gloucestershire Branch have organised a day filled with fun activities showing lifesaving at its’ best.
There are loads of demonstrations and activities arranged throughout the day at the Cheltenham Lido. There will be the chance to have a go in the activities and to learn lots about lifesaving and water safety.
In the evening, you’ll have the chance to go for a swim in the heated outdoor pool and then relax with new friends over a BBQ. What could be better?!

This year the Somerset Branch are organising a fun filled day at Weston-Super-Mare as part of RLSS UK’s National Water Safety Awareness Week (NWSAW).
During the day, members of the public will have the opportunity to watch lifesavers being taught the new Stillwater strand of the Survive and Save programme. As well as find out more from our information tent, which will have CPR demonstrations, water safety information and lots of information about Lifesaving within the West Region.
For those who are lifesavers, you will have the chance to gain some stillwater experience in Marine Lake, which is needed are part of the new Survive and Save awards. Or do you need to update your Emergency Response – Activity Supervisor award? If so TA’s will be on hand during the day to assess you.
There is something for everyone in this event and we are hoping to attract lots of lifesavers to the beach, as well as educate many more people.

Gloucestershire Branch brings you the highly successful Open Water Summer Camp 2012!!
The Camp will take place across 3 days filled with a variety of fun activities for all youth members – raft building, kayaking, team events, Bronze Still Water Award, Emergency Response Open Water (Pre requisites required) and Rookie Paddleboard.
The Summer Camp will take place at South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre with participants arriving around 5pm on Friday 29th June. The Camp finishes at 4pm (prompt) on Sunday 1st July. The Centre has 3 cabins sleeping 10 people each and will be used to provide accommodation throughout the weekend.
The cost of the weekend is provisionally £100 (max) which includes accommodation, food and activities during the whole weekend – please note this is subject to confirmation. All awards are not included in the cost of the trip and are to be paid separately.
To sign up to the trip, download the registration form (MS Word or PDF) and sent it to Katie Briggs (details on the form) with a deposit of £20 no later than 20th May.

On Sunday 8th July 2012, Keynsham Lifesaving Club are holding their first ever lifesaving competition and we want YOU to take part! This event makes an ideal introduction to competitive lifesaving because it’s specifically aimed at lifesavers without little or no prior experience of competitions.
The competition is being held at Keynsham Leisure Centre near Bristol. The competition starts at 11:30 and finishes at 16:30. The competition will consist of the following events:
- Land-Based Initiative Test – Teams will have 90 seconds to respond to a simulated emergency scenario, which will not be previously known to them.
- Aquatic Initiative Test – Teams will have 90 seconds to respond to a simulated emergency scenario, which will not be previously known to them.
- Line Throw – Competitors take it in turns to coil and throw an unweighted line to their team-mate, and pull them to the side as quickly as possible.
- Team Member 1: Obstacle Swim – One team member swims 100m (50m for juniors) passing under the immersed obstacles (which are 70cms deep) once per length.
- Team Member 2: Swim and Tow – The other team member swims 50m (25m for the junior competitors), picks up their casualty and tow them 50m (25m for juniors).
- 50m Freestyle Relay – Competitors complete a 50 m freestyle relay (time permitting)
The competition is open to teams of two in the following age categories: school years 6-8; school years 9-10 and school years 11-13. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a partner – send us your details and we’ll try to match you up with another competitor. There are no prerequisite awards required.
The closing date for entries is Sunday 2nd June 2012. The competition normally costs just £10 per person (£20 per team), but if you post your application before the 20th May 2012 you can take advantage of our special early-bird rate of just £8 per person (£16 per team).

The West Region Committee made up from members of the Avon and North Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset Branch Committees who meet regularly to discuss the development of lifesaving across our Region.
