SUMMARY:RLSS UK National Honours 2017
DESCRIPTION:The annual National Honours Ceremony is designed to say thank you to all who contribute to a reduction in drowning in the UK and Ireland. \nThe concept underlying the Honours system is that length of service and meritorious work should each be recognised separately. There are\, therefore\, two series of Honours – Service Honours and Merit Honours. Each series is independent of the other and each has a different criteria of eligibility. Individuals may\, and often will\, hold both Service and Merit Honours and could receive one of each in a single year. It should be emphasised that both Service Honours and Merit Honours have equal value and are awarded in recognition of valuable work done to support the aims of the Society. \nThe Honours process also includes a series of Special Trophies and Awards. \nThe nominations for this year have been submitted and once the National Honours Committee have met\, honours recipients will be notified by RLSS UK.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Open Water Swimming
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Open Water Swimming\n \nOpen water swimming has become one of the fastest growing leisure and sport activities in the UK in recent years. But what is it all about? \nYou may be wondering – how do I get started with open water swimming? Is it dangerous? \nRLSS UK West Region is running an Introduction to Open Water Swimming Session. The session is being led by Jackie and Ronald MacDonald\, both highly experienced open water swimmers and open water training instructors. The session is suitable for those interested in getting into open water swimming for the first time and those who are already open water swimmers and want to learn more. \nParticipants must be aged 16 or over and must be able to swim at least 800m continuously in a swimming pool. \nThe session will start with a briefing about open water swimming at the Little Harp Pub\, before entering the water for a swim at Marine Lake\, Clevedon. During the water session\, Jackie and Ronald will coach you on how to swim in open water environments. The session is fully supervised by the RLSS UK qualified safety team. Once out of the water\, Jackie and Ronald will explain how to keep warm post-swim and will answer any questions you may have. \nParticipants are invited to arrive at Marine Lake around 10.30am for a 11am start. The water session will finish around 1.30pm\, but there will be an opportunity for some open water swimming under the supervision of the safety team from 2.00pm until 4.00pm. \nBooking is essential (to ensure appropriate safety cover) by emailing openwater@rlsswest.org.uk and costs £5 which includes the price of a red swimming hat. SUMMARY:Rescue Medley Training with Rebecca Coales
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca Coales is a record-breaking Bristolian freediver – have a look at her website at www.omdiver.co.uk. She can swim 145m underwater without fins (that’s nearly 6 lengths of the University of Bristol pool)! Or 186m on a single breath wearing a mono-fin (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeV35fum4rw for footage of Rebecca in action). \nRebecca will be visiting Bristol University on 30 January to run some Rescue Medley training. The training will start at 9am sharp with a theory session\, then we’ll hop into the pool to put some of the theory into practice. This session is free to A&NW lifesavers. \nContact david@rlsswest.org.uk for more details and to register your attendance.
