Specialist Programmes

RLSS UK has developed a number of specialist programmes that are briefly detailed below. If the name of an award is underlined, more information is available so just click on the name of the award.

Police Lifesaving – This programme is specially designed to teach serving police officers water safety, life support and water rescue skills and knowledge. For more details, please contact Adrian Lole, RLSS UK Development Officer at adrianlole@rlss.org.uk

Oxygen Therapy and Defibrillation – This programme provides AED (Automated Electronic Defibrillation) and oxygen therapy training to workplaces and First Responder units.

Oxygen Therapy – This programme provides oxygen therapy and AED training for qualified Pool and Beach Lifeguards (NPLQ and NBLQ).

Pool Lifeguard

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) – This is one of the most widely obtained lifeguard qualifications in the UK. The qualification is recognised by the Department of Education & Science and the International Life Saving Federation (ILSF). The qualification can be used to gain employment in the UK, but also to gain temporary employment in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) – This qualification is endorsed in the same way as the NPLQ and covers all material needed to be a beach lifeguard. This qualification can be used in the UK and for temporary employment in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

NRASTC

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC) – This programme teaches practical lifesaving, life support and first aid skills to teachers and coaches taking swimming lessons or programmed pool activities. It is endorsed by the Department of Education & Science, the Institute of Sport and Recreational Management and the Amateur Swimming Association. This is NOT a lifeguard award.

Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities (RTSSWD) – This programme is designed for lifeguards, helpers, carers, coaches and teachers who supervise swimming pool sessions for disabled swimmers.

Emergency Response – Swimming Pools (ER-SP) – This programme is designed for staff working in a swimming pool with no lifeguard cover. It is also suitable for ancillary staff working in a swimming pool where a lifeguard is available.
