An Interview with Jessica Johnston

In December 2010, Jessica Johnston, the Branch’s Youth Officer, was interviewed for the newsletter:

Firstly, congratulations on being awarded the Branch’s “Young Lifesaver of the Year” award! So how long have you been involved in Lifesaving?
Thank you! I’ve been involved in lifesaving over 10 years now (since I was 5). My mum, Colin and Teri went to lifesaving and I watched, I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to join!

Wow! So what do you love about lifesaving?
I love knowing that you are learning how you could help someone while having fun and keeping fit.

Excellent! So, in April 2010 you were elected onto the Branch Committee, why did you put yourself forward?
I wanted to be Youth Rep to voice the views of young people in the club and help them get the most out of lifesaving.

It’s good to know that Youth Members have a voice on the Committee. What is your aim for your time on the Committee?
As Youth Rep, I want to make each life saving session more interesting and relevant to children. I am also hoping to get many more young people interested and involved within lifesaving clubs and the Branch.

Good luck! But before you go, what other interests do you have?
As well as life saving my hobbies include swimming, shopping and horse riding. I sing with my school choir and I have many friends from Japan as a result of the choir exchange that I took part in. I also volunteer to help at a Brownie unit once a week, which is quite fun.

You sound like you’re very busy! Thank you for letting me interview and good luck in your role as Youth Officer. If your a youth member and want to get in touch with Jessica, click here.
